Is baseball sanctioned in South Dakota?

If baseball is not sanctioned, can my player still earn a Varsity letter?

  • American Legion Baseball is sanctioned and organized in South Dakota through the state American Legion program, with official teams, rules, and state competition.

  • High school baseball, however, is not currently sanctioned by the South Dakota High School Athletic Association (SDHSAA), meaning it isn’t officially recognized as a varsity high school sport by the state’s high school activities governing body.

  • South Dakota and Wyoming are the only states that don’t sanction baseball at the high school level. The South Dakota High School Activities Association voted on June 18, 2025, not to add the sport to its list of sanctioned activities, which means the sport would be governed by the SDHSAA. Instead, baseball is run by the South Dakota High School Baseball Association.

  • Yes — South Dakota high school baseball players can earn varsity letters as long as the individual school’s activities or athletics department includes baseball in its lettering criteria, even though the sport isn’t officially sanctioned by the SDHSAA.
